Girlguiding Centenary Service - October 17th

Post date: Oct 30, 2010 7:48:10 AM

It is 100 years ago this month that Robert Baden-Powell introduced ‘something for the girls’ following the formation of Scouting for boys in 1907. It was therefore felt by a couple of us that we needed to mark the occasion with a Service of celebration of Girlguiding at Mellor Church. Girls and women from Mellor, Mellor Brook, Salesbury and Wilpshire joined together and spoke about the history of Guiding, the values and what we felt was important to ‘today's girls.’ One of the Guide Leaders along with the help of her 2 daughters and 6 decorated boxes ( you needed to be there to appreciate this!) led the ‘sermon’ speaking about how every girl is different but valued for the person she is, and the importance of teamwork using the story of ‘somebody, anybody, nobody and everybody’ Nearly every girl there took an active part in this Service, from flag bearers to poems and prayers and I know they and their families enjoyed the warmth and enthusiasm which came across.

Can I take this opportunity to thank all the people of Mellor Church for welcoming us and helping us to make this Service such a memorable occasion.
