May 2012

In April we enjoyed Rose Donkin’s stories of her life with ‘Bed and Breakfast.’

Thank You to all who completed Quiz forms to help fund “M.U. on the Move.”  It is hoped this will publicise the work of Mothers’ Union and help to raise the profile.

Many of us felt able to express our written opinion on same sex marriage, as part of the Mothers’ Union national response to the UK Government’s consultation on ‘Equal Civil Marriage,’ Thank You.  Please note all forms to be returned by 11th May.

May promises to be a busy month:

1.    Whalley Deanery Festival at Clitheroe St. Paul – 2nd May 7.30pm.

2.    Corporate Communion in Church - Sunday 6th May 10.30am.

3.    Outing to the Empire Theatre to see ‘Carousel’ – Tuesday 8th May 7.30pm.

4.    We are invited by Balderstone M.U. to a ‘Cake and Bubbly’ evening in Mellor Brook Community Centre, cost £3.50 – Tuesday 15th May 7.30pm.

We are to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee at our June meeting on the 12th with a ‘Buffet Supper, etc.’  Tickets are £5 and we hope members of the congregation will join us.

         Mothers’ Union

Our Christmas Party was held on Tuesday 13th December.  We were joined by friends from Balderstone Mothers’ Union and Osbaldeston Union of Catholic Mothers.

The Day School Children opened the evening with excerpts from their Christmas concert, all excellent.  Our thanks to the children, the Headteacher and the staff.

We then served suppers, had a quiz and then were entertained by our ladies, “Through the Year with Mothers’ Union.”  This included a little ‘extra’ item by the crew of H.M.S. Mellor who also kindly washed up for us.

My sincere thanks to everyone who worked so hard in the preparation and on the evening.

We meet again in January on Tuesday 10th.

We all extend our love and sympathy to Rita whose husband John died on 23rd November.  Please remember her in your prayers.

May I wish you all every blessing for 2012.

Mrs Christine Reade came in November to share with us her ‘Secrets & Surprises’. As the wife of our Bishop she is a very busy person and I was so grateful to her for coming to speak to us.

The stall at the Autumn Fayre was full of cakes, biscuits etc and raised £242.

The Christmas Party will be on Tuesday, 14th December commencing at 7.30pm. The evening includes a meal and entertainment. We extend a welcome to all ladies. Please make sure you have a ticket and pay £5 as you arrive.

Autumn Meal

Fifty six ladies had a wonderful evening at Stanley House. The food and entertainment were greatly appreciated. Our thanks to Rita for organising the event.

Whalley Deanery Quiet Evening

We had a prayerful and inspiring evening at Chipping. My thanks to those who came with me.

We meet on Tuesday, 9th when our speaker will be Mrs Christine Reade.

Autumn Fayre

We shall have our usual stall selling cakes, biscuits, jams and grocery goods. Contributions to the stall will be greatly appreciated.

I am pleased that Joan Sharples is back home in Mellor after her long stay in hospital.

We send our love and sympathy to Pam Jackson on the death of her mother, Joan Singleton, and we continue to pray for Carol Wain as she has further treatment.

September Meeting

posted 19 Sept 2010, 09:12 by Rita Gorman

I think it is fair to say that many, if not all, of us were amazed at some of the things we heard at the September meeting when our speaker was Kirsten Heys ( from Mellor Post Office). Kirsten gave a very interesting and at times quite graphic account of her work as a Prison Officer at Garth Prison.
The October meeting will be on Tuesday, 12th when we have an Autumn Meal at Stanley House.

We had an excellent meeting in March. Our thanks to the Revd Roland Nicholson for helping us to think about Lent through the Bible and music.

We meet in April on Tuesday, 13th when our speaker will be Sarah Draper from the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.
Two of our ladies are still poorly; Joan Sharpies is back in hospital and Judith Rolfe is at home but still receiving treatment. We offer them our love and continue to pray for them.

October - December 2009

On October 25th 2009 the Reverend Paul Rolfe enrolled  3 new members into out M.U. and we welcomed Judith (Paul's wife) to our branch.
At our meeting in November Mr Derek Hartley gave a wonderful presentation about his work with the Mision to Lepers.
December 2009
"What did you do in the war mum?"
Our annual Christmas party took place on December 8th when the day school children entertained us with a shortened version of Cinderella Rockafella. This was followed by a three course meal, quiz and our members performed the play seen in the photograph above.
This year's play was a tribute to the role women played in World War II.  It was particularly appropriate for our M.U members  to perform this play as 2 of our members Irene Holt and Marjorie Knight have recently been awarded special medals for their service as Land Army Girls.

Mellor Mothers' Union September/October Meetings

At the September meeting Dr. Peter Cowell gave us a very informative and entertaining talk telling us about his life and work in Thailand. Peter illustrated his talk showing us lots of beautiful coloured slides.
October 6th 2009 saw 40+ members dining together at the  La Scala Restaurant
Susan, Margaret B. and Judith completing the handbag quiz.

Margaret Ashton and Rita Gorman.

Margaret (Enrolling Member) welcomed everyone especially our new Vicar's wife Judith.

After a two course meal with coffee and mints, games were played. It was lovely to see Judith walking around the tables introducing herself to everyone.
Once again the evening was proclaimed a resounding success and a big thank you must go to Rita Gorman for organising this outing in such atmospheric surroundings.
Betty, Yvonne and Lynn checking the answers - the quiz was won by Susan Venables who produced 13 of the possible 15 items found in a lady's handbag.
